This is definitely one of the ‘don’t miss’ dives on the whole of Menorca. You will find this dive listed in many diving guide books. Because of its nature it is obviously only for qualified and experienced divers and do also make sure your guide knows the cave well.
This is a boat dive, with the boat normally anchoring in Pont d’en Gil Bay.
The cave can be reached by 2 entrances – one a very tight squeeze accessed from inside Pont d’en Gil Bay and the other a large opening outside the bay (approx. 20 metres diameter). The ideal dive, for those who enjoy the challenge, is to enter the cave by the small entrance then after navigating the cave depart via the large opening and return through the ‘arch’ into the bay and the boat.
Having squeezed through the narrow entrance, the cave penetrates over 200 metres into the cliff. Whilst the maximum depth is about 13 metres most of the navigable cave does not exceed 6 metres. The real unique feature is that for a lot of the cave you can surface into a large airspace and bounce along supported by your jacket and enjoy the rock formations of stalactites and stalagmites at leisure. Take a good torch and camera if possible.
Once you reach the end of the cave it is time to turn around descend and bearing slightly to the left, exit by the large opening. It is then a leisurely return underwater through the ‘arch’ of Pont d’en Gil Bay and navigating back to the boat’s anchor.
